Loving Right Now- Santosha

Dogs are the best teachers.  Content with right now and not looking towards the future.

Santosha

How many times have you caught yourself wishing for better and all the while better was looking you straight in the face?  It just took perspective and a heart filled with gratitude. Santosha teaches us just that; to be content with what is and not what could be.  During yoga training I was happily obliged to focus on contentment for a month and it really taught me to see things differently.

Santosha is the second of Patanjali's Niyamas (the do's) and probably one of my most favorites to focus on.   Speaking from my heart and my own struggles, this Niyama taught me to be mindful of the beauty in all moments, good and bad.  I can remember one of many times that I spent by my mom's side in the hospital watching her suffer and struggle to breathe... it was a moment of watching my youngest daughter brush her hair and me feeling inside so proud and CONTENT.  That's what its about.  Life is just that, some moments are uncomfortable and that's ok, because those moments can become tolerable when finding contentment in the ordinary- which then with perspective turns into the extraordinary.  It's all how you look at it.

How to bring Santosha into your life

  • You are good enough, with just where you are in life

  • Right here is where you belong

  • Live in the present and acknowledge it as such

  • Live mindfully

  • Find beauty in the ordinary

  • Have some gratitude even when you're in a shit-storm

At some point, you gotta let go, and sit still, and allow contentment to come to you
